The place value chart helps us to determine the place value and
of a digit in a number. Remark
For example: In 2346, let us find the place value and face value Nowadays, Lakhs is also written
as Lacs. Both are correct.
of each digit.
Digit Place Value Face Value
2 2 thousands = 2000 2
Th H T O
2 3 4 6 3 3 hundreds = 300 3
4 4 tens = 40 4
6 6 ones = 6 6
Now, consider 32467 and find the place value and face value of each digit.
Digit Place Value Face Value
3 3 ten thousands = 30000 3
TTh Th H T O 2 2 thousands = 2000 2
3 2 4 6 7 4 4 hundreds = 400 4
6 6 tens = 60 6
7 7 ones = 7 7
Expanded Form of Large Numbers
A number can be expressed in its Expanded Form with the help of a place value chart. When we expand a
number to show the value of each digit, we are writing the number in expanded form.
For example: 2346 = 2000 + 300 + 40 + 6 and 32467 = 30000 + 2000 + 400 + 60 + 7 (above tables).
Procedure to write the expanded form:
Step 1: Place the number in the place value chart.
Step 2: Identify the place of each digit (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.).
Step 3: Find the place value of each digit by putting as many zeros after it as the number of places to its right
in the place value chart.
Step 4: Write the expanded form of the number by writing all the place values in addition form using the ‘+’ sign.
The following example will explain the above procedure even better:
Ex. Let us write the following numbers in expanded form:
(a) 44862587 (b) 992695421 (c) 2859516
Sol. We will start by placing the number in the place value chart. Then we identify the digits in the ones
place, tens place, hundreds place...... and so on.
