Remember
1. The place value of a digit depends on its position in the place value chart, whereas the face value
does not depend on its position. It is the value of the digit itself.
2. The place value of a digit is obtained by putting as many zeros after it as the number of places towards
its right in the place value chart
3. The place value of 0 is 0 itself, wherever it may be.

of Numeration, we use Ones, Thousands, Millions, Billions, etc. as periods. In each period, there are three
places. The place value chart used in the International System of Numeration is shown below:

For example: The number 65932708 is read as sixty-five million nine hundred thirty-two thousand seven
hundred eight.
Placement of Commas in Large Numbers

A comma (,) is used to separate periods in large numbers. It helps us to read and write them easily.
• In the Indian system of numeration, the first comma comes after the hundreds place (i.e., three digits
from the right); thereafter, it comes after every two digits.
• In the International system of numeration, a comma comes after every three digits from the right.
Ex 1. Insert commas in 754321 and write it in words according to the Indian system.
Sol. 7,54,321; “Seven lakh fifty-four thousand three hundred twenty-one”.
