              Adding 2-digit numbers

example 1: In a store room, there are
36 boxes of cornflakes and 22 boxes

of oats. How many boxes of cereal are

              there?
Solution: To know the total number of

cereal boxes, we need to add 36 and
              22.

Step 1. Arrange the numbers Step 2. Add the ones Step 3. Now, add the

one below the other first. tens.
                        keeping in mind the 6 ones + 2 ones = 8 ones 3 tens + 2 tens = 5 tens

place value of the Write 8 in the ones Write 5 in the tens
                        digits. column. column.

Tens Ones Tens Ones Tens Ones

                             3 6 3 6 3 6

                        + 2 2 + 2 2 + 2 2

                                                                          8 5 8

Thus, there are 58 boxes in the store room.
