To solve a word problem, first we Keywords used
decide whether to add or subtract. Addition: in all, total, together, altogether, sum
Then we solve the problem Subtraction: more, less, left, difference, taking away
accordingly.
example 1: 62 people are sitting in a hall. 20 more people join them. How many
people are there in all?
Solution: Keyword used: in all Tens Ones
This is an addition problem. 6 2
So, 62 + 20 = 82 people. + 2 0
Thus, 82 people are there in the hall now. 8 2
example 2: Siya had 36 ribbons. She gave
12 ribbons to Jiya. How many ribbons are left with Siya?
Solution: Keyword used: left Tens Ones
This is a subtraction problem. 3 6
So, 36 – 12 = 24 ribbons. – 1 2
Thus, 24 ribbons are left with Siya. 2 4
