Objective: foster collaboration and deepen place-value understanding by having

students match two-digit numbers with their expanded-form representations.
Materials Required: Puzzle-piece cards (printed and cut)

               Set A: Two-digit number cards (e.g., “67”, “42”, “85”, etc.)
               Set B: Corresponding expanded-form cards (e.g., “6 tens + 7 ones”, “4 tens + 2

ones”, “8 tens + 5 ones”, etc.), envelopes or small bags (to hold each card)
               Procedure:

Š Shuffle each set of cards separately.

Š Place each card face down in an envelope or a small bag.
                 Shuffle & Deal

Š Provide 1 set of 2 randomly chosen cards (1 number card and 1 expansion
                      card) to each student.

                 Mingle & Match

Š On the teacher’s signal (“Go!”), students mingle around the room. each
student reads their clue aloud. for example:

l If they hold a number card, they say “I am 67.”
l If they hold an expanded-form card, they say “I am 6 tens + 7 ones.”

Š Students listen and search for the person whose clue matches theirs (e.g.,
                      “67” ↔ “6 tens + 7 ones”).

                 explain to Peers

Š Once matched, the pair helps find another pair and explains to them how
their cards go together: “67 means 6 tens and 7 ones, so the cards match.”
