 1. Ranjan is __________ than Kavya. (shorter/taller) Using Body parts

 2. The cupboard is _____________ than the window. (bigger/smaller) Long ago people used their body parts such as fingers, handspans, cubits, feet, etc.

 3. The sofa on the left is __________ than the sofa on the right. (heavier/lighter) to measure lengths of objects.

 4. The bottle can hold __________ water than the glass. (more/less)

 Comparing LEngTHs

When we want to compare the lengths of two objects, we We use the words ‘tall’, handspan palm finger/digit cubit
can place them side by side. ‘short’, heavy, light, etc. to
 measure something.
Let us compare the lengths of a toothpick and a toothbrush.

We see that the toothbrush is longer than the toothpick or the toothpick is shorter pace footspan armspan

 than the toothbrush.

Now, compare the lengths of a crayon, a pencil and an eraser. Inaya and Ishan are placing their handspans
along the stick to measure its length.

Inaya: The length of the stick is 5 handspans.
We can clearly see that the pencil is the longest and the eraser is the shortest among Ishan: The length of the stick is 7 handspans.

 the three items.
Think! Why do they get a different number of

              handspans for the same stick?

              Using small objects

Look at the following. Here, the length of a pencil is

 2. Name an object that is measured using erasers.

 4. Name an item which is shorter than an electric pole. ______________________ The pencil is 10 erasers long. 5 sharpeners long.
