Comparing WEigHTs
We use the words ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ to compare the weights of objects. We can
compare the weights of some objects by just observing them. Look at the following.
A pencil box is lighter A crayon is lighter than a A car is heavier than a
than a school bag. water bottle. bicycle.
Think Tank Experiential Learning Logical Thinking
1. Are smaller objects always lighter than bigger objects?
2. Take a banana in one hand and an orange in the other. Can you say which one is lighter?
a Balance or scale
When we are unable to say which item is heavier or lighter just by
looking at them, we use a balance or scale to compare weights. A
balance has two pans.
Look at the balance given here. There is a watermelon on one pan
and a papaya on the other. The pan with the watermelon goes
down. The pan with the papaya goes up.
Thus, the watermelon is heavier than the papaya or the papaya is lighter than the
watermelon.
