              Adding one (1)

There are four birds on a One more bird comes and How many birds are there
tree. sits on the tree. on the tree now?

                               4 + 1 = 5

There are 5 birds on the tree now.
When we add 1 to a number or a number to 1, we get the number that comes

               just after the given number.

              order in Addition

              Let us find 2 + 4 and 4 + 2.

                        2 + 4 = 6 4 + 2 = 6

The answer is the same in both the cases.

In addition, if we change the order of the numbers, the answer does not change.

                    activity
Objective: To reinforce the concept of order of addition. Experiential Learning

Materials Required: 2 different coloured blocks (red and blue).
               Procedure:

               Round 1

Š Take two different colours of blocks (e.g., 4 red and 5 blue).
Š Make a tower by placing one colour on top of another.

Š Write the total number of blocks in your notebook.
               Round 2

                      Š Take apart your tower.

Š Now rebuild the tower, but this time switch the order of the blocks.
Š Again, write the total number of blocks in your notebook.

Compare the answers and write what you have understood about the order of addition.
