Subtraction: backward counting
Kiyara has 15 toys. She gives 9 toys to her brother Kavi.
Kavi: How many toys are left with you now?
Kiyara: 6 toys are left with me.
Kavi: How?
Kiyara: I subtracted the number of toys I gave you from the total number of toys.
You can count backwards to subtract. Start from 15 and count back 9 steps as follows:
15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Similarly, to subtract 5 from 12, we start with the bigger number 12 and count
backwards 5 steps.
Be Aware
12 11 10 9 8 7 Subtraction is the opposite of
1 2 3 4 5 addition. In addition, we count
forward but in subtraction, we
Thus, 12 – 5 = 7. count backwards.
