              VerticaL Subtraction

Numbers can be subtracted by writing one below the other. This method of
              subtraction is called vertical subtraction.

In vertical subtraction, we write the larger number above and the smaller one below.

              Example: Subtract 4 from 9.

Solution: Since 9 > 4, so we write the numbers as Draw lines equal to the bigger
shown below. number. Cross out lines equal to
                                                                                    the smaller number. Count the
9 number of uncrossed lines to get
                                                                                           the answer.
                           – 4
                               5

                           Thus, 9 – 4 = 5.

              1. Cross out (7) to subtract. One has been done for you.
                   (a) 5 (b) 7 (c) 8

                        – 2 – 6 – 4

              2. Subtract the following by drawing lines. One has been done for you.
                   (a) 4 (b) 8 (c) 3

                        – 3 – 7 – 1

                   (d) 7 (e) 6 (f) 9

                        – 7 – 4 – 3

              3. Write the numbers in column form in such a way that the bigger number is

above and the smaller number is below. Then subtract.

                   (a) 3 – 2 (b) 4 – 2 (c) 5 – 1 (d) 8 – 7
