Subtracting Zero (0)
Think Tank Critical Thinking
Mona has 5 apples. She ate nothing. Think about subtracting 0 from
any number. Which of these is
How many apples are still with her? always true?
Clearly, 5. (a) The answer becomes zero.
(b) The answer becomes 1.
So, 5 – 0 = 5. (c) The number remains the same.
Similarly, we have 6 – 0 = 6, 4 – 0 = 4 and so on. (d) The number becomes double.
Subtracting one (1)
Math Insight
Rakhi has 4 apples. She ate one apple.
l When we subtract
How many apples are left with her? zero from a number,
the number remains
Clearly, 3. the same.
l When we subtract 1
So, 4 – 1 = 3. from a number, the
answer is the number
Similarly, we have 8 – 1 = 7, 5 – 1 = 4 and so on. that comes just
before it.
Subtracting a number from itself l When we subtract a
number from itself,
Alka had 3 apples. She ate all three. How the answer is zero (0).
many apples are left with her?
Clearly, 0.
So, 3 – 3 = 0. Think Tank Logical Thinking
Similarly, 8 – 8 = 0, 9 – 9 = 0 and so on. 1. How old are you this year? .........
2. How old were you last year? .........

Fill in the blanks.
1. 6 – 0 = 2. 9 – 9 = 3. 7 – 1 =
4. 8 – = 8 5. 5 – = 4 6. 2 – = 0
7. – 0 = 12 8. – 1 = 15 9. – 18 = 0
