Subtracting Zero (0) Example 1: There were 9 cupcakes in a basket.
 Think Tank Critical Thinking
Mona has 5 apples. She ate nothing. Think about subtracting 0 from 4 cupcakes were eaten. How many
any number. Which of these is cupcakes are left?
How many apples are still with her? always true? 9

 Clearly, 5. (a) The answer becomes zero. Solution: 9 – 4 = 5 – 4
 (b) The answer becomes 1. Thus, 5 cupcakes are left. 5
 So, 5 – 0 = 5. (c) The number remains the same.

 Similarly, we have 6 – 0 = 6, 4 – 0 = 4 and so on. (d) The number becomes double. Example 2: Mala has 8 marbles. Arpita has 5 marbles.

Subtracting one (1) Who has more marbles and by how many?

 Math Insight
Rakhi has 4 apples. She ate one apple. Solution: Mala :
 l When we subtract
How many apples are left with her? zero from a number, Arpita : 8
 the number remains – 5
Clearly, 3. the same. Thus, Mala has 3 marbles more. 3
 l When we subtract 1
 So, 4 – 1 = 3. from a number, the
 answer is the number
 Similarly, we have 8 – 1 = 7, 5 – 1 = 4 and so on. that comes just Practice time 4H
