Objective: To reinforce the concept of subtraction.
Materials Required: empty shoe box, paint, brush, paper cutter, some table-tennis
balls, subtraction fact (up to 10) cards and a toy hammer.
Preparation:
Take an empty shoe box with a lid.
Cut out 10 circles from the lid as shown in the
image. Make sure that the size of the circle is
slightly smaller than the circumference of the
balls.
Prepare some cards with subtraction problems
within 10.
Paint the shoe box in bright colours to make it look attractive.
Shuffle the cards and place them face down on a table.
Procedure:
Whack a Ball
Invite the students in small groups for the activity.
A student will pick a card and solve the problem. for example, if the card says
8 – 3, the student will count and place 8 balls in the 8 circular slots.
To subtract 3, the student will whack three balls with a toy hammer so that
the balls that are hit, drop into the box.
To find the answer of 8 – 3, the student will count the number of remaining
balls, that is, 5.
Similarly, other students will follow the steps by choosing other cards.
Continue the activity till time permits.
