CoMPARING NUMBERS
Pratham and Riya are playing a video game.
Pratham got 58 points and Ria got 69 points. Who
is the winner?
They know that 58 is to the left of 69 on the
number line. So, 58 is less than 69, that is, 58 < 69 or 69 > 58.
58 69
60 65 70
We can also compare numbers by following two simple rules as given below instead
of counting one by one on the number line.
Rules
1. A 2-digit number is always greater than a 1-digit number.
Example: 34 > 9 as 34 is a 2-digit number and 9 is a 1-digit number.
2. When both the numbers are 2-digit numbers.
(a) The number that has the bigger tens digit is greater.
Example: Tens Ones Tens Ones

4 > 3 Count the number of
So, 46 > 36 or 36 < 46. given pencils and compare the two
numbers.
(b) If the tens digit is the same, then
compare the ones digits. The number
that has the bigger ones digit is greater.
Example: Tens Ones Tens Ones
5 0 5 2
5 = 5
0 < 2
So, 50 < 52 or 52 > 50.
Order of Numbers
Ascending order: When the numbers are arranged from the smallest to the biggest,
it is called ascending order. for example: 25, 36, 47, 68, 89, 90.
Descending order: When the numbers are arranged from the biggest to the smallest,
it is called descending order. for example: 95, 76, 57, 38, 29, 12.
