              MULTIPLYING A 2-DIGIT NUMBER BY A 1-DIGIT NUMBER

              Multiplication without Regrouping

              example: Multiply 23 by 3.

              Solution:

Step 1. Arrange the given Step 2. Multiply the ones. Step 3. Multiply the tens.

               numbers in columns 3 × 3 = 9 ones 2 × 3 = 6 tens
               correctly.
                                                                t O t O
                              t O 2 3 2 3
                              2 3 × 3 × 3
                          × 3 9 6 9

               Thus, 23 × 3 = 69.
