              DIVISION BY EQUAL GROUPING

              Division means equal grouping also.

Sujata’s mother made 15 laddoos. She wants to put 5 laddoos

on each plate. How many plates will she need?

Mother puts 5 laddoos on one plate.

                                   15 – 5 = 10 laddoos left.

Mother then puts 5 laddoos on another plate.

              10 – 5 = 5 laddoos left. Be Aware
                                                                                               There is no difference
                                                                                               between equal sharing
                                                                                                and equal grouping.
Finally, mother puts 5 left over
                                laddoos on the third plate.
                                                                                  Think Tank Critical Thinking
                                5 – 5 = 0 laddoos left. Make groups of 3 animals
                                                                                each. Each group must
Thus, mother needs 3 plates to have all kinds of animals.

              put all the laddoos.

We can say that 15 divided by 5 is equal to 3.

              We write it as

                                     15 ÷ 5 = 3 Number of plates

Total number of Number of laddoos
                   laddoos on each plate

example: Vidit has 18 donuts. He puts 3 donuts in a

box. How many boxes will he need for all
                              the donuts?

Solution: Let us put 3 donuts in each box.

Thus, Vidit needs 6 boxes for all the donuts.

We can say that 18 divided by 3 is equal to 6. We write it as 18 ÷ 3 = 6.
