The given situation can be written as: 2 Quotient (Q)
9 ÷ 4 = 2 Remainder 1 Divisor 4 9 Dividend
Or 9 ÷ 2 = 4 R 1 – 8 4 × 2 = 8
1 Remainder (R)
Or 9 = 4 × 2 + 1
activity
Experiential Learning
1. Divide the class into random groups of 2, 3, 4 and 5 students.
2. Randomly give a few beads to each group. (E.g. a group of 4 students gets 15 beads.)
3. Ask the students to share these beads equally among their group members.
4. Ask questions like: ‘Were you able to share the beads equally?’
‘How many beads were left unshared?’
5. Then ask them to explain by doing long division and identify the quotient, remainder,
divisor and dividend in each case.
Practice Time 6f
1. Divide to find the quotient and remainder.
(a) 4 2 5 (b) 5 3 2 (c) 8 4 7 (d) 9 7 5
2. Colour the cans with the same colour if you get the same remainder.
PROPERTIES Of DIVISION
Division of a number by itself
Put 3 bindis on 3 strips. Put 5 bindis on 5 strips.
3 ÷ 3 = 1 5 ÷ 5 = 1
Any number except 0 when divided by itself gives the quotient as 1.
