We also measure the weight of one heavier object in terms of other lighter objects
using a balance. Look at these pictures and fill in the boxes.
(a) (b) (c)
1 papaya weighs as 6 books weigh as 2 dolls weigh as much
much as 7 oranges. much as school as pencil boxes.
bag.
All these objects such as a cup, spoon, pebbles, blocks, etc., used for measurement
are called non-standard units of weight (mass).
Standard Units of Weight
To measure the weight of objects accurately we use the standard units of weight.
Gram
The smaller unit of weight (mass) is gram.
In short it is written as g. It is used to
measure the weight of lighter objects such
as an orange, a soap bar, coin, etc. About 150 g About 100 g About 4 g
Kilogram
The standard unit of weight (mass) is
kilogram. In short it is written as kg.
It is used to measure the weight of heavy
objects such as bags of vegetables, boxes
of fruits, flour, rice, etc. About 1 kg About 10 kg About 25 kg
You can see the weights of grams and
kilograms used for measuring weight while buying vegetables and fruits.
If we put 1000 grams together, we get 1 kilogram. So, 1000 g = 1 kg.
