              3. Decide which containers have a capacity of less than 1 L.
                    (a) (b) (c) (d)

              4. Write the quantity of liquid as shown in the beakers.

                    (a) (b) (c) (d)
                                     mL mL mL mL

              ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF CAPACITIeS

              Addition of Capacities

To add the capacities of two or more containers in litres or millilitres, we simply

add the numbers and write down the unit.

              Example 1: Add the following.

                             (a) 63 L + 68 L (b) 486 L + 158 L (c) 178 mL + 556 mL

              Solution: (a) 1 1 (b) 1 1 (c) 1 1

                                          6 3 L 4 8 6 L 1 7 8 mL

                                  + 6 8 L + 1 5 8 L + 5 5 6 mL
                                      1 3 1 L 6 4 4 L 7 3 4 mL
              Subtraction of Capacities

To subtract the capacities of two containers, we simply subtract the smaller number

from the bigger number and write down the unit.

              Example 2: Subtract the following.

                             (a) 90 L – 55 L (b) 732 mL – 367 mL

              Solution: (a) 8 10 (b) 6 12 12
                                      9 0 L 7 3 2 mL

                                  – 5 5 L – 3 6 7 mL
                                      3 5 L 3 6 5 mL
