ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF MONEY
Look at these toys and the price tags attached to them.
Addition of Money
To add two or more amounts, we simply add the amounts in the same way as we
add numbers.
example 1: Rani bought a doll for `80 and a top for `16. Find the total cost of these
two toys.
Solution: Cost of a doll = `80
Cost of a top = + `16
Total cost of both toys = `96
Thus, the total cost of both the toys is `96.
example 2: Akash bought a bat for `95 and a toy car for `84. Find the total amount
spent by Akash. 1
Solution: Cost of a bat = ` 95
Cost of a toy car = + ` 84
Total cost = ` 179
Thus, Akash spent `179 in all.
Subtraction of Money
To subtract one amount from another amount, we simply subtract the smaller
amount from the bigger amount in the same way as we subtract numbers.
example 3: Sanjiv had `97. He bought a toy car for `84. How much money is left
with him?
Solution: Amount of money Sanjiv had = `97
Cost of 1 toy car = – `84
Money left = `13
Thus, `13 is left with Sanjiv.
