CheCKING SUBTRACTION WITh ADDITION
Rinki joined the students committee and deposited `80. She withdrew `45 in the
same month. Hence, she was left with 80 – 45 = `35. Now she wants to check if
her subtraction was correct or not. So, she checks as follows:
t O t O
7 10 1
8 0 Minuend 3 5 We get the minuend.
– 4 5 Subtrahend + 4 5 So, the answer is
3 5 Difference 8 0 correct.
Let us look at a few more examples.
(a) Checking (b) Checking
t O t O t O t O
4 7 2 1 2 10 1
– 2 6 + 2 6 3 0 1 8
2 1 4 7 – 1 2 + 1 2
1 8 3 0
The answer is correct. The answer is correct.
Thus, the sum of the ‘difference’ and the ‘subtrahend’ is the ‘minuend’.
That is: Difference + Subtrahend = Minuend
Practice Time 3D
Find the difference and check the answer by addition.
1. t O t O 2. t O t O
3 7 2 9
– 1 2 + – 1 9 +
3. 4.
t O t O t O t O
5 0 6 0
– 3 0 + – 4 9 +
teacher’s 1. Tell the students that addition and subtraction are opposites of each other. So, one can be used to check
tip the other.
2. Encourage the students to develop their subtraction strategies and check them.
