              SUBTRACTION STORIeS

example 1: Priya has 15 kites and Saransh has 11 kites. Who has more kites and

                                by how many?

Solution: Priya has 15 kites. Saransh has 11 kites.
We first compare 15 and 11.

                                Clearly 15 > 11, so Priya has more kites. t O

Now, we find the difference. 1 5
                                15 – 11 = 4 kites – 1 1

So, Priya has 4 more kites than Saransh. 4

example 2: There are 52 seats in a bus. 35 passengers are sitting in the bus. How
                                many seats are vacant?
                                                                                          O
Solution: To find the number of vacant seats in t 12
                                                                                      4
the bus, we subtract 35 from 52. So, 5 2
                                52 – 35 = 17 seats – 3 5
So, 17 seats are vacant in the bus. 1 7
