Addition of 3-digit numBers with regrouping

Nobita: There is a charity event in our school

for flood-affected people. I have collected
265 items of clothing including shirts

              and trousers from my area.

              Shizuka: I have also collected

              398 dresses from my area.

              Doraemon: You both have

              collected 663 items of

              clothing.

Nobita: How do you calculate that, Doraemon?

Doraemon: To know the total number of clothing items, we need to add 265 and

              398. We can do this step by step as shown here.

Step 1. Add the ones and regroup. H t O

                                                                                                   1
              5 + 8 = 13 ones 2 6 5

                     = 1 ten + 3 ones + 3 9 8
                                                                                                        3
So, write 3 in the ones column and carry over 1

              to the tens column.

Step 2. Add the tens and regroup. Step 3. Add the hundreds.
              1 + 6 + 9 = 16 tens 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 hundreds

                          = 1 hundred + 6 tens So, write 6 in the hundreds
Now, write 6 in the tens column and carry column.

              over 1 to the hundreds column. H t O
                                   H t O 1 1

                                    1 1 2 6 5
                                    2 6 5 + 3 9 8
                                + 3 9 8 6 6 3

                                         6 3

              Thus, 265 + 398 = 663.
