              regrouping Tens

We have learnt how to subtract by regrouping tens into ones for 2-digit numbers.

Let us use this to subtract 3-digit numbers.

              Example 1: Subtract 246 from 793.

Solution: First write the numbers in columns according to their place value and

                              then subtract.

Step 1. Subtract the ones. Step 2. Subtract the tens.

              Since 3 < 6, regroup. 8 tens were left.
                9 tens + 3 ones = 8 tens + 13 ones So, 8 – 4 = 4 tens.

              Now, 13 – 6 = 7 ones.
                                                                                        H t O

                                   H t O 8 13
                                        8 13 7 9 3

                                   7 9 3 – 2 4 6
                               – 2 4 6 4 7
                                             7
