iDEntifying thE MathEMatical opErations
The process of identifying the mathematical operations means choosing which
mathematical operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) will be useful
in solving a word problem.
Example 1: Rachna had 12 ribbons. Her mother gave her 5 more ribbons. How many
ribbons does she have in all?
Solution: Keyword used is 'in all'. So, choose the operation:
+ – × ÷ 12 + 5 = 17 ribbons
Example 2: Soni had a packet of 20 crayons. She lost 4 crayons at school. How many
crayons does she have left?
Solution: Keyword used is 'left'. So, choose the operation:
+ – × ÷ 20 – 4 = 16 crayons
Example 3: A pack of cards has 52 cards. How many cards will 3 such packs have?
Solution: The value of '1 unit' is given. To find the value of 'more units', choose the
operation:
+ – × ÷ 52 × 3 = 156 cards
Example 4: The cost of 8 oranges is `80. What is the cost of 1 orange?
Solution: The value of 'more units' is given. To find the value of '1 unit', choose the
operation:
+ – × ÷ `80 ÷ 8 = `10
