              FaCe Value aND PlaCe Value


              The face value of a digit is the digit itself.

              The place value of a digit is the value of the digit depending on its place.

              To find the place value of a digit, multiply the digit by the value of its place.

              For example: In the number 2176,

              Face value                 Place value

                                6                        6 ones = 6 × 1 = 6
                                7                        7 tens = 7 × 10 = 70
                                1                        1 hundred = 1 × 100 = 100
                                2                        2 thousands = 2 × 1000 = 2000

              Example 1: Write the place value of 7 in the given set of numbers: 7; 78; 789 and 7893.

              Solution:

              Example 2: Find the face value and the place value of each                       Math Insight
              digit in 9409.                                                             The place value of 0 is

                                                  9           9 ones = 9 × 1 = 9

                                                  0           0 tens = 0 × 10 = 0
                                                  4           4 hundreds = 4 × 100 = 400
