              Measuring length

              units of Measuring length

Centimetre, metre and kilometre are some standard units of length.

              Measuring short length

We use a scale to measure the length of an object. A scale Math Insight

has two types of marks — long marks and short marks. The 1 cm = 10 mm
long marks on the scale are 1 cm apart. Each centimetre is

divided into 10 small equal parts (short marks) called millimetres (mm).

To measure the length of an object like a pencil using a scale, place the object alongside
the ruler with one end of the object at the zero mark of the ruler as shown below.

                                                                                        was ‘Gaz’.

                                                                                        2 Hath = 1 Gaz.
We take the reading at the other end of the object. This
gives us the length of the object. The length of the pencil is 4 cm.
