Example 2: I bought a silver foil pack of 16 m 72 cm. How much is it in cm?
Solution: 16 m 72 cm = (16 × 100) cm + 72 cm = 1600 cm + 72 cm
= 1672 cm
Centimetre into metre
To convert centimetres into metres and centimetres, we divide the number of metres
by 100.
Example 3: Convert 600 cm into m. 100 600 6 m
600
Solution: 600 cm = (600 ÷ 100) m = 6 m 0 cm
On converting cm into m, write the last two digits as cm and the remaining digit as m.
For example: 3261 cm = 32 m 61 cm.
Kilometre into Metre
To convert kilometres into metres, we multiply the number of kilometres by 1000.
Example 4: Aditi goes to school by her bicycle. The distance of the school from her home
is 3 km. What is the distance in m?
Be Aware
Solution: 3 km = (3 × 1000) m = 3000 m 1 km = 1000 m.
Kilometre and Metre into Metre
To convert kilometres and metres into metres, we
Think Tank
multiply the number of kilometres by 1000 and add the Manoj has a measuring tape
product to the number of metres. that is not correct. His 1 m
Example 5: Raju travels a distance of 8 km 490 m. Find tape is actually only 90 cm
long. He does not know this
the distance in m. and measures a cloth as 10
metres. Find the cloth’s actual
Solution: 8 km 490 m = (8 × 1000) m + 490 m length.
= 8000 m + 490 m = 8490 m
Thus, Raju travels 8490 m.
Metre into Kilometre
To convert metres into kilometres, we divide the number of metres by 1000.
Example 6: Convert 7725 m into km.
Solution: 7725 m = 7000 m + 725 m or 7725 m = (7725 ÷ 1000) km
= 7 km + 725 m
1000 7725 7 km
= 7 km 725 m 7000
So, 7725 m = 7 km 725 m. 725 m
