              Example 3: Add 138 km 924 m and 343 km 218 m.

Solution: Arrange the given lengths in the km and m columns and then add them.
                             Step 1: Add ‘m’.

                                       924 m + 218 m = 1142 m km m

                                       = 1000 m + 142 m = 1 km + 142 m 1 1 1

                                        Write 142 in the m column and carry 1 3 8 9 2 4
                                      over 1 km to the km column. + 3 4 3 2 1 8

                             Step 2: Add ‘km’. 4 8 2 1 4 2

                                       1 km (carried over) + 138 km + 343 km = 482 km

Write 482 in the km column.
                             Thus, 138 km 924 m + 343 km 218 m = 482 km 142 m

              addition of Weights

To add weights, first check the units of the given numbers. If the numbers are in the same

unit, then add the numbers and write the unit.
              Example 1: Add: (a) 2 kg and 9 kg (b) 700 g + 900 g

              Solution: (a) 2 kg (b) 7 0 0 g

                                  + 9 kg + 9 0 0 g

                                     1 1 kg 1 6 0 0 g = 1000 g + 600 g = 1 kg 600 g

                             Thus, 2 kg + 9 kg = 11 kg. Thus, 700 g + 900 g = 1 kg 600 g.
When the given weights are a combination of two units, arrange them in their respective

              columns and then add them.

              Example 2: Add 5 kg 762 g and 9 kg 671 g.
Solution: Arrange the given measures in the kg and g columns and add them.

Step 1: Add grams (g) and convert them into kg and g.

                                       762 g + 671 g = 1433 g = 1000 g + 433 g = 1 kg 433 g
Write 433 under the g column and carry over

1 to the kg column. kg g
                             Step 2: Add kilograms (kg). 1 1

                                       1 kg (carried over) + 5 kg + 9 kg = 15 kg 5 7 6 2
                                                                                                         9 6 7 1
                                       Write 15 under the kg column. + 1 5 4 3 3
                             Thus, 5 kg 762 g + 9 kg 671 g = 15 kg 433 g
