              Example 3: Subtract 136 L 540 mL from 200 L.

Solution: Arrange the given measures in the L and mL columns and then subtract.

                             Step 1: Subtract the millilitres.

540 mL cannot be subtracted from 0 mL. L mL
                                                                                                     9 9 9
                                       So, we regroup litre and millilitre. 1 10 10 10 10

                                       We can write 200 L as 199 L and 1000 mL 2 0 0 0 0 0
                                       Now, 1000 mL – 540 mL = 460 mL – 1 3 6 5 4 0

                                       Write 460 under the mL column. 6 3 4 6 0

                             Step 2: Subtract the litres.

                                       199 L – 136 L = 63 L

Write 63 under the L column.

                             Thus, 200 L – 136 L 540 mL = 63 L 460 mL
