same Number of Digits
Let us compare the two 4-digit numbers. Compare the thousands digits first. The number
with the greater thousands digit is greater.
Example 2: Compare: (a) 7120 and 6585 (b) 6182 and 8115
Solution: Th H t O Th H t O
7 1 2 0 6 1 8 2
6 5 8 5 8 1 1 5
Since 7 > 6 Since 6 < 8
So, 7120 > 6585 So, 6182 < 8115
If the thousands digits are the same, then compare the hundreds digits.
The number with the greater hundreds digit is greater.
Example 3: Compare: (a) 6855 and 6321 (b) 7182 and 7298
Solution: Th H t O Th H t O
6 8 5 5 7 1 8 2
6 3 2 1 7 2 9 8
Same 8 > 3 Same 1 < 2
So, 6855 > 6321 So, 7182 < 7298
If the thousands and hundreds digits are the same, then compare the tens digits.
The number with the greater tens digit is greater.
Example 4: Compare: (a) 4729 and 4716 (b) 9126 and 9198
Solution: Th H t O Th H t O
4 7 2 9 9 1 2 6
4 7 1 6 9 1 9 8
Same 2 > 1 Same 2 < 9
So, 4729 > 4716 So, 9126 < 9198
If all the other digits are the same, then compare the ones digits. The number with the
greater ones digit is greater.
Example 5: Compare: (a) 9115 and 9118 (b) 3229 and 3224
Solution: Th H t O Th H t O
9 1 1 5 3 2 2 9
9 1 1 8 3 2 2 4
Same 5 < 8 Same 9 > 4
So, 9115 < 9118 So, 3229 > 3224
