              greatest aND smallest Numbers

Let us find the greatest number among 7839; 999 and 5326. Th H t O
Step 1: Arrange the numbers in the place value chart. 7 8 3 9

Step 2: Cross out the smallest number (999) from the group. 9 9 9

                                                 7839 999 5326 5 3 2 6
Step 3: Now, compare the two remaining numbers. In this case, 7839 is greater than 5326.

Step 4: Thus, 7839 is the greatest number among 7839, 999 and 5326.
Example 1: Find the greatest number among 4562, 1234 and 2076.

Solution: Step 1: Arrange the numbers in the place value chart.
Step 2: Cross out the smallest number (1234) from the group. Th H t O
                                                                                                      4 5 6 2
                                       4562 1234 2076 1 2 3 4

Step 3: Now, compare the remaining two numbers. In this 2 0 7 6
case, 4562 is greater than 2076.
Step 4: Thus, 4562 is the greatest number among 4562, 1234 and 2076.

Example 2: Find the smallest number among 4215, 6738 and 9831.

Solution: Step 1: Arrange the numbers in the place value chart.
Step 2: Cross out the greatest number (9831) from the group. Th H t O
                                                                                                      4 2 1 5
                                       4215 6738 9831 6 7 3 8
Step 3: Now, compare the remaining two numbers. In this 9 8 3 1

case, 6738 is greater than 4215 or you may say 4215
                                      is smaller than 6738.
Step 4: Thus, 4215 is the smallest number among 4215, 6738 and 9831.

              orDeriNg oF Numbers

We arrange numbers in increasing order, that is, from the smallest to the greatest. This is

              called ascending order.
Ritvik noted down the numbers from the number plates of four cars.

              The numbers are 2937, 6543, 1359, and 5023. Th H t O
He wants to arrange the numbers in a particular order. 2 9 3 7

First, he writes the numbers in the place value chart and 6 5 4 3 Greatest number
                                                                                      1 3 5 9
                                                                                                      Smallest number
              then starts comparing. 5 0 2 3
              Looking at the thousands place digits, 2, 6, 1 and 5, he finds that 1 < 2 < 5 < 6.

Thus, the four numbers in ascending order are:
                     1359 < 2937 < 5023 < 6543
