              Conversion of rupees into paise

              We know that, `1  = 100 paise

              To convert rupees into paise, we multiply the amount in rupees by 100.

              For example:

                   (a)  `9 = (9 × 100) paise = 900 paise                                Knowledge Desk
                   (b)  `26 = (26 × 100) paise = 2600 paise                          The word  'rupee' is derived

                   (c)  `98 = (98 × 100) paise = 9800 paise                          “rupya” which means silver coin.

              Conversion of rupees and paise into paise


              To convert rupees and paise into paise, we multiply the amount in rupees by 100 and
              then add paise to the result.
              For example:

                   (a)  25 rupees 75 paise                           (b)  `34.50 = 34 rupees 50 paise

                           = (25 × 100) paise + 75 paise                          = (34 × 100) paise + 50 paise

                           = 2500 paise + 75 paise                                = 3400 paise + 50 paise
                          = 2575 paise                                           = 3450 paise

              Alternative Method:

              To convert rupees and paise into paise, we remove the symbol (`) and the point (.) and
              write paise (p) at the end.

              For examples: (a) `36.25 = 3625 paise                    (b) `15.50 = 1550 paise


               Teacher’s   Encourage the students to think why the barter system gave way to the concept of money? Ask questions like:
                  Tip      ‘What if the other person doesn’t want what you have?’, ‘What if the thing you have is more valuable than what
                           they’re giving?’, ‘What’s easier to carry around for trade – a cow or a coin?’
