FormiNg the greatest aND smallest Numbers

To form the greatest number, we arrange the digits in descending Th H t O

              order. 9 8 2 1

For example: The greatest 4-digit number using digits 1, 9, 8, 2 is 9821. Digits are in
                                                                                                     descending order.
To form the smallest number, we arrange the digits in ascending

              order. Th H t O

              For example: The smallest 4-digit number using the digits 1, 9, 8, 2 1 2 8 9
              is 1289. Digits are in

Example 1: Form the greatest 4-digit number using the given digits: ascending order
                   (a) 5, 3, 7, 2 (b) 4, 9, 8, 9

Solution: To form the greatest 4-digit number, we arrange the digits in descending order.

                             (a) The greatest 4-digit number using the digits 5, 3, 7, 2 is 7532.

                             (b) The greatest 4-digit number using the digits 4, 9, 8, 9 is 9984.
Example 2: Form the smallest 4-digit number using the given digits.

                   (a) 5, 3, 7, 2 (b) 4, 3, 7, 6

Solution: To form the smallest 4-digit number, we arrange the given digits in ascending order.
                             (a) The smallest 4-digit number using the digits 5, 3, 7, 2 is 2357.

                             (b) The smallest 4-digit number using the digits 4, 3, 7, 6 is 3467.

While forming numbers, if one of the given digits is a zero (0) then,
Š To form the greatest number, we arrange the given digits in descending order

                      (including 0).

Š To form the smallest number, we place '0' at the second highest place from

the left and arrange the remaining digits in ascending order.
Example 3: Form the greatest and the smallest 4-digit numbers using the digits 7, 9, 0 and 3.

Solution: The greatest 4-digit number is 9730.

The smallest 4-digit number is 3079.
