successor
The number that comes just after a given number is called its successor. To find the
successor of a number, add 1 to the number.
Example 1: Find the successor of: (a) 709 (b) 2154
Solution: (a) The successor of 709 is 709 + 1 = 710
(b) The successor of 2154 is 2154 + 1 = 2155
Predecessor
The number that comes just before a given number is called its predecessor. To find the
predecessor of any number, take away 1 from the number.
Example 2: Find the predecessor of: (a) 921 (b) 8120
Solution: (a) The predecessor of 921 is 921 – 1 = 920
(b) The predecessor of 8120 is 8120 – 1 = 8119
Example 3: Find the successor and predecessor of 2304.
Solution: The successor of 2304 = 2304 + 1 = 2305
The predecessor of 2304 = 2304 – 1 = 2303
