Example 3: Find the sum of 7428 and 2387.
Solution: Arrange the numbers in the place value columns and add using the following
steps:
Step 1: Add the ones.
8 + 7 = 15 ones = 1 ten + 5 ones
Write 5 in the ones column and carry over 1 ten to the tens column.
Step 2: Add the tens. th H t O
1 (carried over) + 2 + 8 = 11 tens 1 1
= 1 hundred + 1 ten 7 4 2 8
Write 1 in tens column and carry over 1 hundred + 2 3 8 7
to the hundreds column. 9 8 1 5
Step 3: Add the hundreds.
1 (carried over) + 4 + 3 = 8 hundreds
Write 8 in the hundreds column.
Step 4: Add the thousands.
7 + 2 = 9 thousands
Write 9 in the thousands column.
Thus, the sum of 7428 and 2387 is 9815.
