Add the numbers. Check your answer by adding them in the opposite order.
1. 2. 3.
H t O H t O th H t O
8 7 2 1 0 6 3 0 9 0
+ 1 2 7 + 4 0 5 + 6 3 0 7
Addition properties
order of Addition
Let us see what happens when we change the order of the addends while adding.
(a) H t O H t O (b) th H t O th H t O
2 4 3 1 2 5 2 3 5 0 3 0 4 3
+ 1 2 5 + 2 4 3 + 3 0 4 3 + 2 3 5 0
3 6 8 3 6 8 5 3 9 3 5 3 9 3
In both cases, we get the same answer.
This shows that the order of the addends does not change the sum. This is called the
order property of addition.
property of 0
When ‘0’ is added to a number, the sum is equal to the number itself.
Examples: (a) 123 + 0 = 123 (b) 4325 + 0 = 4325 (c) 6739 + 0 = 6739
property of 1
When we add '1' to a number, the sum is the successor of that number.
Examples: (a) 386 + 1 = 387 (b) 2168 + 1 = 2169 (c) 4329 + 1 = 4330
Adding 10, 100 And 1000
Adding 10
When we add '10' to a number, the value of the digit at the tens place increases by 1 and
the ones digit remains the same.
Examples: (a) 442 + 10 = 452 (b) 6954 + 10 = 6964 (c) 5302 + 10 = 5312
