Write the smaller number below the bigger number and follow the given steps:

Step 1: Subtract the ones. Step 2: Subtract the tens. Step 3: Subtract the hundreds.
                       8 – 1 = 7 ones 4 – 2 = 2 tens 3 – 2 = 1 hundred
Write 7 in the ones column. Write 2 in the tens column. Write 1 in the hundreds column.

                           H t O H t O H t O
                           3 4 8 3 4 8 3 4 8
                       – 2 2 1 – 2 2 1 – 2 2 1
                                    7 2 7 1 2 7

              Thus, 348 – 221 = 127
              Subtraction with Regrouping

Before starting subtraction with regrouping, let us revise the regrouping.

              Regrouping Tens to Ones
We know that if there are not enough ones in the minuend to subtract from, we regroup

              1 ten into 10 ones. 2 tens 4 ones = 1 ten 14 ones

                                        1 ten = 10 ones

                                      t O t O t O t O

                                      1 0 1 10 0 2 4 1 2 14 4
                1 ten 10 ones 24 1 ten 14 ones

              Example 1: Subtract 246 from 452.
Solution: Write the numbers in columns and follow the given steps:
                            Step 1: Subtract the ones.
Since, 6 ones cannot be subtracted from H t O

2 ones, regroup tens and ones, that is, 4 12
                            borrow 1 ten = 10 ones to ones. 4 5 2

                            So, 5 tens and 2 ones = 4 tens and 12 ones – 2 4 6
                            Now, 12 ones – 6 ones = 6 ones 6

Step 2: Subtract the tens. Step 3: Subtract the hundreds.
                                      4 tens – 4 tens = 0 tens 4 hundreds – 2 hundreds

                                    H t O = 2 hundreds

                                        4 12 H t O
                                    4 5 2 4 12
                                – 2 4 6 4 5 2
                                        0 6 – 2 4 6
                                      Thus, 452 – 246 = 206 2 0 6
