Titu: The distance from Bhopal to Jammu by road is around 1492 km and by air it is
1117 km.
Sonu: It means we will travel 375 km less when we travel by air.
Let us learn how Sonu finds out that the distance by air is 375 km less than the distance by road.
For this, take away 1117 from 1492 by using the following steps:
Step 1: Write the smaller number below the greater number in columns.
Since 2 ones < 7 ones, we regroup the tens into ones. th H t O
9 tens and 2 ones = 8 tens and 12 ones. 8 12
Now, subtract the ones. 1 4 9 2
12 ones – 7 ones = 5 ones – 1 1 1 7
Write 5 in the ones column. 5
Step 2: Subtract the Step 3: Subtract the Step 4: Subtract the
tens. hundreds. thousands.
8 tens – 1 ten = 7 tens 4 hundreds – 1 hundred = 3 1 thousand – 1 thousand = 0
Write 7 in the tens hundreds. thousands
column. Write 3 in the hundreds Write 0 in the thousands
column. column.
th H t O th H t O th H t O
8 12 8 12 8 12
1 4 9 2 1 4 9 2 1 4 9 2
– 1 1 1 7 – 1 1 1 7 – 1 1 1 7
7 5 3 7 5 0 3 7 5
Thus, 1492 – 1117 = 375.
Example 2: Subtract 5189 from 9258.
Solution: Write the smaller number below the greater number in columns and subtract
using the following steps:
Step 1: Subtract the ones. Since 8 < 9, regroup the tens th H t O
into ones to subtract ones. 14
5 tens 8 ones = 4 tens 18 ones 9 1 4 18
8
5
2
Now, 18 ones – 9 ones = 9 ones – 5 1 8 9
Step 2: Subtract the tens. Since 4 tens < 8 tens, regroup 4 0 6 9
the hundreds into tens to subtract the tens.
2 hundreds and 4 tens = 1 hundred and 14 tens
14 tens – 8 tens = 6 tens
