                             Step 3: Subtract the hundreds.

                                      1 hundred – 1 hundred = 0 hundreds

                             Step 4: Subtract the thousands.

                                       9 thousands – 5 thousands = 4 thousands

                                       Thus, 9258 – 5189 = 4069. Th H T O

Example 3: Find the difference of 3952 and 2189. 14
                                                                                                           8 4 12
Solution: Write the smaller number below the greater number 3 9 5 2

in columns and subtract from the ones place. Regroup – 2 1 8 9
                             whenever required. 1 7 6 3

                             Thus, the difference of 3952 and 2189 = 1763.

              Example 4: Subtract 398 from 3264.

Solution: Write the numbers in columns and subtract using the following steps:

Step 1: Since 4 < 8, regroup the tens into ones to subtract ones.

                                       14 ones – 8 ones = 6 ones

                             Step 2: Again, 5 < 9, regroup the hundreds into tens to Th H T O

                                      subtract the tens. 11 15

                                       15 tens – 9 tens = 6 tens 2 1 5 14
                                                                                                      3 2 6 4
                             Step 3: Again, 1 < 3, so regroup the thousands into – 3 9 8
                                      hundreds to subtract the hundreds. 2 8 6 6

                                        11 hundreds – 3 hundreds = 8 hundreds.

                             Step 4: Subtract the thousands.

                                        Since, there is no thousands

digit in the subtrahend, we Get it right!

assume it as '0'. Subtract 349 from 7628.
                                                                                  Th H T O Th H T O
                                       2 thousands – 0 thousands
                                                                                  7 6 2 8 7 6 2 8
                                                         = 2 thousands – 3 4 9 – 3 4 9

                                       Thus, 3264 – 398 = 2866.

Teacher’s Ensure that the students write the numbers correctly in place value columns while subtracting two numbers
Tip with different number of digits.
