              Division of a 3-digit number

              Example 2: Divide 633 by 3.

Solution: Step 1: Arrange the numbers as shown here. 3 633 211 Q

                             Step 2: Divide 6 hundreds by 3. 6
                                                                                                      03
                                    3 × 2 = 6, so 6 hundreds ÷ 3 = 2 hundreds 3
                                                                                                        03
Write 2 in the hundreds place of the quotient. 3
                                    Subtract 6 – 6 = 0 0 R

Step 3: Bring down the tens. Divide 3 tens by 3.

                                    3 tens ÷ 3 = 1 ten
Write 1 in the tens place of the quotient. Subtract 3 – 3 = 0

Step 4: Bring down the ones.

Divide 3 ones by 3. Checking:
                                                                           (Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend
                                      3 ones ÷ 3 = 1 one 211 × 3 + 0 = 633

                                      Write 1 in the ones place of the 633 + 0 = 633
                                    quotient. Subtract 3 – 3 = 0 Thus, the answer is correct.

                                      Thus, quotient (Q) = 211, Remainder (R) = 0.
              Example 3: Divide 805 by 4.

              Solution:

                     4 805 201 Q Since the second digit Checking:
                        8
                        005 is 0 and 0 < 4, bring (Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend
                           4 down the next digit of 201 × 4 + 1 = 805
                           1 R dividend by putting a 804 + 1 = 805
                                          0 in quotient for that
                                          number. 805 = 805
                                                                   Thus, the answer is correct.
                    Thus, Q = 201, R = 1
