To represent 10000 in the place value chart, a fifth place from tth th H T O
the right is introduced called the ‘ten thousands (tth) place’. 9 9 9 9

reading and Writing 5-digit numbers in the Place + 1
              Value Chart 1 0 0 0 0

The place value chart for 5-digit numbers has two periods:

              Ones period and thousands period.

Ones period has three places—Ones (O), tens (t) and Hundreds (H).
Thousands period has two places—thousands (th) and ten thousands (tth).

Let us look at some 5-digit numbers written in the given place value chart.

                   Periods → thousands Ones

Places → ten thousands thousands Hundreds tens Ones
                                        (tth) (th) (H) (t) (O)

                   Values of
                   Places → 10000 1000 100 10 1
                         (a) 2 3 7 5 2
                         (b) 3 8 9 0 5
                         (c) 7 3 9 8 4
                         (d) 8 7 2 1 9

To write the numbers without using a place value chart, we separate the periods

using a comma (,). Thus, we can write and read these numbers as:
                    (a) 23,752— Twenty-three thousand seven hundred fifty-two

                    (b) 38,905 — Thirty-eight thousand nine hundred five

                    (c) 73,984 — Seventy-three thousand nine

                                     hundred eighty-four Get it right!

                    (d) 87,219 — Eighty-seven thousand two The name of the period is
hundred nineteen always read and written in
                                                                                    singular form.
99,999 is the greatest 5-digit number. It can be
shown in the place value chart given here and read Three thousands.
as ‘Ninety-nine thousand tth th H T O Three thousand.

              nine hundred ninety-nine’. 9 9 9 9 9

                                                           Be Aware
Sometimes, we leave a short space between two periods instead of using a comma (,).
                  For example: 11 475.
