comparing Unlike Fractions with same numerator

We can compare unlike fractions having the same numerator.

              Example 3: Compare 3 and 3 .
                                          6 4 3
Solution: Let us look at the fractions using figures. 3 4
                                                                                         6
Looking at the shaded parts, we find that
                             3 < 3 Be Aware

                             6 4 (But 6 > 4) In unlike fractions with the same
                                                                                 numerator, the fraction with the
ordering Fractions greater denominator is smaller.

                                                        1 3 5 4 2
Example 4: Arrange the fractions , , , and in ascending order.
                                                        6 6 6 6 6
              Solution:

                                 1 2 3 4 5
                                 6 6 6 6 6
                             1 < 2 < 3 < 4 < 5
                                                                                      Think Tank Logical Thinking
So, the fractions in ascending order are: What is the fraction

                                                                                    of boys and girls to
                                  1 < 2 < 3 < 4 < 5 the total number of students in
                                  6 6 6 6 6 your class? Which fraction is
                                                                                    greater?
                                                         5 5 5 5 5
Example 5: Arrange the fractions , , ,, in descending order.
                                                        6 10 8 7 9

Solution: Since the numerators of the given fractions are the same, the fraction

with the greater denominator will be the smaller fraction.
                             Comparing the denominators of the given fractions, 10 > 9 > 8 > 7 > 6.

                                                                                     5 5 5 5 5
Thus, the fractions in descending order are: > > > >
                                                                                     6 7 8 9 10
