              Basics of Geometry

Let us recall the basic concept of

geometry learnt in the previous class. Knowledge Desk

Point The word ‘Geometry’ is derived from
the Greek words ‘Geo’, meaning ‘Earth’
A small dot made with a sharp pencil and ‘Metron’ meaning ‘Measurement’.
Thus, the word ‘Geometry’ means ‘Earth’s
or a pen on paper, the tip of a needle, measurement’.

              etc., represent a point.
A point shows an exact location.

It has no length, breadth or thickness. Q

A point is denoted by a capital letter.

              For example: Q, P and A are points. P A

              Line

A straight path which goes in two opposite directions indefinitely is called a line.

Thus, a line has no end point. To name a given line, we consider any two points lying
              on it.

For example: If A and B are any two points on a line, we A B
call it ‘line AB’ and the line is denoted by AB .

              ray

A ray is a part of a line which goes on only in one A B
direction. A ray has one end point. For example, in the
given figure, AB is a ray which can be written as AB , where A is its initial

point. The sun’s rays are an example of rays.
