Line segment
A line segment is a part of a line. It has two C
end points. A line segment has a definite Think Tank
length. List the objects that
represent a line segment.
So, it can be measured as well as drawn. D
Here, in the given figure, a line segment is
shown whose end points are C and D. The line segment CD is denoted by CD or DC.
measuring a Line segment
We use a centimetre ruler to measure line segments. The distance between two
consecutive numbers on this scale is 1 cm.
Let us measure the length of the given line segment, AB using a ruler.
A B
We use the following steps:
Step 1: Place the ruler along the line segment in such a way that one end of the line
segment coincides with the zero mark on the ruler.
Step 2: Read the measure on the ruler aligned with the other end. The reading gives
the length of the segment.
Here, A is at the 0 mark and B aligns with the 7 cm mark. So, the length of
the line segment AB is 7 cm.
A 7 cm B
Drawing a Line segment
We use a sharp pencil and a ruler to draw a line segment of given length.
Let us draw a line segment of length 6 cm by following the given steps.
Step 1: Mark a fine dot with a pencil on a sheet of paper. Name it point A.
