Now, if we add the place values of all the digits together, then we get
100000 + 20000 + 4000 + 500 + 80 + 7 = 1,24,587 ← Standard Form
Inversely, we can express the number as the sum of the place values of the digits as:
1,24,587 = 100000 + 20000 + 4000 + 500 + 80 + 7 ← expanded Form
example 2: Express the following numbers in their expanded form.
(a) 23,498 (b) 64,021 (c) 5,78,587 (d) 9,83,198
Solution:
(a) We can express 23,498 in the expanded form as
23,498 = 2 × 10000 + 3 × 1000 + 4 × 100 + 9 × 10 + 8 × 1
= 20000 + 3000 + 400 + 90 + 8
(b) We can express 64,021 in the expanded form as
64,021 = 6 × 10000 + 4 × 1000 + 0 × 100 + 2 × 10 + 1 × 1
= 60000 + 4000 + 20 + 1
(c) We can express 5,78,587 in the expanded form as
5,78,587 = 5 × 100000 + 7 × 10000 + 8 × 1000 + 5 × 100 + 8 × 10 + 7 × 1
= 500000 + 70000 + 8000 + 500 + 80 + 7
(d) We can express 9,83,198 in the expanded form as
9,83,198 = 9 × 100000 + 8 × 10000 + 3 × 1000 + 1 × 100 + 9 × 10 + 8 × 1
= 900000 + 80000 + 3000 + 100 + 90 + 8
example 3: Write the numbers in their standard form.
(a) 40000 + 8000 + 900 + 90 + 1 Fast Check
(b) 700000 + 30000 + 5000 + 100 + 20 + 8 Fill in the blanks.
(c) 800000 + 4000 + 600 + 30 + 2 1. 200000 + ______ + 100 +
(d) 600000 + 90000 + 7 60 + ____ = 250169
Solution: 2. 3 × 10000 + 7 × 1000 +
6 × 100 + 8 × 1 = ______
(a) 40000 + 8000 + 900 + 90 + 1 = 48,991
(b) 700000 + 30000 + 5000 + 100 + 20 + 8 = 7,35,128
(c) 800000 + 4000 + 600 + 30 + 2 = 8,04,632
(d) 600000 + 90000 + 7 = 6,90,007
teacher’s Explain to the students that zero is the only digit whose place value is always zero, irrespective of the place it
tip occupies in the number. For example, in 55077, the place value of 0 in the hundreds place is zero.
