Other units for Measuring Lengths
Inch, foot, yard, mile, etc. are other units which are
used commonly for measuring length. Fast Check
Mostly, we measure our heights in feet and inches. What is your height?
For example, Raman is 4 feet 6 inches tall. We write ‘ft’ for foot and feet.
Look at the ruler given below.

We can see that one side of the ruler measures length in centimetres (cm) and the
other side measures in inches (in).
12 inches make 1 foot. Think Tank
1 foot = 12 inches or 12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft) List some objects whose
lengths can be measured
example 5: Convert the following: in inches.
(a) 3 ft 4 in into in (b) 28 in into ft and in
Solution: (a) We have 1 foot = 12 inches
Therefore, 3 ft = 3 × 12 in Challenge Question
= 36 in On a map, 1 cm represents 1 km
3 ft 4 in = 36 in + 4 in in real life. Two villages are 3 km
700 m apart. What is the distance
= 40 in between them on the map,
(b) We have 12 in = 1 ft expressed in cm and mm?
To convert inches to ft, we will divide by 12.
Therefore,

4 Remainder
Here, the quotient becomes feet (ft) and the remainder becomes inches (in).
So, 28 in = 2 ft 4 in.
