additiOn and SuBtractiOn Of caPacitieS
We first arrange the given measurements of capacity in columns as per the units and
then add or subtract column-wise.
example 1: Find the sum:
(a) 165 L 240 mL, 106 L 325 mL and 268 L 15 mL
(b) 50 kL 42 L 950 mL and 18 kL 20 L 75 mL
Solution: (a) L mL (b) kL L mL
1 1 1 1 1
1 6 5 2 4 0 5 0 0 4 2 9 5 0
1 0 6 3 2 5 + 1 8 0 2 0 0 7 5
+ 2 6 8 0 1 5 6 8 0 6 3 0 2 5
5 3 9 5 8 0
Thus, 165 L 240 mL + 106 L Thus, 50 kL 42 L 950 mL + 18 kL 20 L
325 mL + 268 L 15 mL 75 mL = 68 kL 63 L 25 mL.
= 539 L 580 mL.
example 2: Subtract the following:
(a) 19 L 485 mL from 31 L 50 mL
(b) 68 kL 45 L 65 mL from 85 kL 100 L
Solution: (a) L mL (b) kL L mL
10 9 14 9 9 9 9
2 0 10 4 10 7 15 0 10 10 10 10 10
3 1 0 5 0 8 5 1 0 0 0 0 0
– 1 9 4 8 5 – 6 8 0 4 5 0 6 5
1 1 5 6 5 1 7 0 5 4 9 3 5
Thus, 31 L 50 mL – 19 L Thus, 85 kL 100 L – 68 kL 45 L 65 mL
485 mL = 11 L 565 mL. = 17 kL 54 L 935 mL.
example 3: A bucket contains 10 L 234 mL of water. A mug has 1 L 197 mL of water.
How much water is there in both the containers?
Solution: L mL
1 1
Water in bucket = 1 0 2 3 4
Water in mug = + 1 1 9 7
Total water in mug and bucket =
1 1 4 3 1
Thus, the total water in the mug and the bucket is 11 L 431 mL.
