PredeCessor And suCCessor 4. Write the predecessor and the successor of the following numbers:

The predecessor of a number is a number that comes just before the given number. (a) 34364 (b) 73648 (c) 11143
 The predecessor of a number is obtained by subtracting 1 from it. (d) 840068 (e) 154836 (f) 199999

 For example, 48,947 – 1 = 48,946 ; 2,34,564 – 1 = 2,34,563 5. (a) Find the sum of the place values of the two 6s in 460246.

Clearly, the predecessor of a number is 1 less than the given number. (b) Find the difference of the place value and the face value of the digit 4 in 740128.
The successor of a number is a number that comes just after the given number. The
successor of a given number is obtained by ComPAring And ordering numbers
adding 1 to it. Challenge Question

For example, 78,547 + 1 = 78,548; A number has a predecessor We have already learnt the method of comparing numbers up to 4 digits in the

6,85,798 + 1 = 6,85,799 with five digits and a successor Critical Thinking previous class. The rules of comparison for large numbers are the same.
Clearly, the successor of a number is 1 more with six digits. What number Comparing numbers with different number of digits
than the given number. could this be? The number with more digits is greater.

example: Write the predecessor and the successor of the following numbers. example 1: Compare 36,455 and 6,83,779
 (a) 47,129 (b) 87,100 (c) 7,84,071 Solution: tth th H T O L tth th H T O

 Solution: 3 6 4 5 5 6 8 3 7 7 9

 (a) Predecessor of 47,129 = 47,129 – 1 = 47,128 5 digits 6 digits
      Successor of 47,129 = 47,129 + 1 = 47,130

 (b) Predecessor of 87,100 = 87,100 – 1 = 87,099 Thus, 36,455 < 6,83,779.
      Successor of 87,100 = 87,100 + 1 = 87,101 Comparing numbers with the same number of digits
 (c) Predecessor of 7,84,071 = 7,84,071 – 1 = 7,84,070 If the number of digits is the same in the given numbers, then we start comparing

Successor of 7,84,071 = 7,84,071 + 1 = 7,84,072 the digits from the extreme left, that is, from the greatest place to the lower places.

If the digits are the same at a place, we move to the next digit from the left until we

find different digits at any particular place. The digits that are different are compared
 1. What is the successor of the greatest 5-digit number?
 2. How many digits are there in the predecessor of the greatest 6-digit number? to find the larger number.
              example 2: Which is greater?

 Practice time 1b (a) 62,538 or 62,438 (b) 8,24,646 or 8,24,776

   1. Write the place value of the underlined digit in the given numbers: Solution:

 (a) 46975 (b) 70347 (c) 27364 (a) tthth H T O tthth H T O (b) L tthth H T O L tthth H T O
 (d) 373640 (e) 436243 (f) 508244 6 2 5 3 8 6 2 4 3 8 8 2 4 6 4 6 8 2 4 7 7 6
   2. express the following numbers in the expanded form:

 (a) 47889 (b) 80791 (c) 578914 (d) 800450 = =
                                                                                             =
                                           =
   3. Write the following numbers in their standard form: > =
 (a) 300000 + 8000 + 900 + 60 (b) 1L + 4TTh + 3Th + 6H + 2T + 9O <

 (c) 8 × 100000 + 7 × 10000 + 5 × 1000 + 4 × 100 + 2 × 1 So, 62,538 > 62,438. So, 8,24,646 < 8,24,776.
