Thus, the amount of surface enclosed by a

Hence, we can say that the area of a surface or a plane figure can be 1 cm

calculated by counting the number of square units needed to cover the 1 cm
surface or the plane figure.

example 1: Find the area of the following figures drawn on the squared paper by
counting squares. Consider each small square as a 1 cm square.

Solution: (a) Number of unit squares in the figure = 15
Therefore, area of the figure = 15 sq. cm.
